The philosophy that guides my work in social media:

How faith influences the way I approach creativity, clients, and content.

by Taylor Marmorstone

When I told one of the pastors at my church that I was now working as  a full-time social media manager, the first question he asked me was: “What is your philosophy on social media?” I looked at him like he was crazy. I had run into him outside of a restaurant, just expecting some small talk, but suddenly he was asking me a deep question about all of my perspectives on  social media as a Christian. You know, since Christians are called to live differently and not be conformed by the patterns of this world. That’s when it hit me. I was constantly letting myself be consumed by probably the most conforming place - social media.

I believe that God called me to use my creativity in a space where I can inspire others. I have always found so much joy in being creative – whether it was dance, music, event planning, graphic design, and eventually deciding on marketing as my degree in college. When I found a new passion of creating content and helping others manage their social media platforms – and that I could do it for a living – I realized that working in such a field came with a cost.  I needed to make sure that I could keep myself from getting consumed by the comparison, discouragement, high-pressure, and toxicity that can be found in the industry. Believe me – it’s SO easy to be consumed by it. I needed a philosophy on how I was going to approach working in social media. Here are the four points I keep coming back to:

1. I believe social media should be used to inspire and invite others.

Social media marketing should be stewarded to INSPIRE others to come alongside brands and support them in their mission. It shouldn’t be fueled by comparison — it’s about INVITING others to support these businesses or join in with what they are doing.

Rather, I want to set brands apart in their own distinct way that showcases the heart behind their business. Every brand has a special purpose and vision that started it all, and it’s my job to capture, create, and communicatethat in the best possible way. I want people to be inspired and encouraged by the content they view.

2.  I believe that serving and loving my clients matters more than any algorithm.

Behind every client is a heart, story, and vision that was carefully crafted and brought to life. It’s not just about scheduling posts or chasing high engagement – it’s partnering with our clients to create content that authentically and intentionally communicates their mission.

Every post, caption, graphic, and strategy has the power to influence people. I want to steward that influence well and with the most high-quality work possible.

Along with that, I also strive to love on my clients as best as possible. Love with my words, my patience, generosity of my time, celebrating wins, and giving them the highest quality of work I can. Being servant-hearted and loving towards my clients gives ordinary work so much more purpose and makes me love my job even more.

3. I’m choosing faithfulness over comparison.

Social media is constantly flooded with highlight reels, making it so easy to compare your work and growth to someone else’s. Spending hours on platforms every day makes guarding my heart even more important. I’ve learned that getting caught in comparison makes me lose sight of the unique calling and opportunities God has for me. I am called to be faithful with what God has given me and not focus on having the biggest platform or most viral content. It’s about using my gifts well to serve my clients with excellence.

Setting boundaries on what I’m consuming is extremely important. If the content I am consuming while constantly being on social media is creating feelings of comparison, envy, insecurity, or self-doubt, it’s a sign I need to take a step back. Managing my own time scrolling outside of work and taking breaks from consuming is needed for my mental health. The goal isn’t to avoid learning and getting inspired by others, but to make sure I find my confidence and identity in the Lord and not in anything else.

4. I believe what I capture, create, and communicate should be a form of worship.

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinth. 15:58)

This verse reminded me that I should be STEADFAST & IMMOVABLE in Christ through an ever-changing industry of social media and marketing. I want to steward the gifts God has given me and glorify Him in everything I create. The world of social media changes daily, but one thing should never change: Christ is my firm foundation. The work that I do should glorify HIM, serve my clients, and overflow from the grace and gifts He has given me. Everything I create can be a form of worship to the ultimate Creator. It’s about reflecting the One who gave us the ability to create.

Overall, as Christian social media managers, we are called to something greater than building brands or creating the next viral post. We’re called to be faithful stewards of the talents God has given us and have a servant heart towards our clients. In an industry that is constantly changing, overly saturated, and overflowing with comparison, may we remain steadfast and immovable in Christ. I pray that He will shape the work we produce and also the hearts behind it. I also pray that this encourages anyone else working in this industry that can sometimes feel like a dark space – we are called to be a LIGHT!
